It’s been a while since I’ve been here to spread my insights of great ponderence, but this made me take pause and write.  So, a potentially racist situation goes down that results in a man’s arrest and Barack Obama immediately comes to the defense of his friend…Yale Professor of African Studies, Henry Louis Gates in the midst of the frey.

It has been an unnecessary crap storm if you will, that Obama has backed himself into regarding this incident having not been availed of the proper facts.  I’ve heard it said that there were mostly egos involved that got out of hand.  It is more a case of ONE ego, that of Professor Gates.  As the police reports have stated, Gates became belligerent the moment the white officer (there was also a black and Hispanic officer on the scene, as well) began asking routine questions that one would ask on a B&E (breaking and entering) call (i.e. Is there anyone else in the house? May we look around?, etc.).  These are all standard procedure for a call of this nature.  However, the YALE professor felt it beneath him to be questioned in any manner regarding suspicion of any kind. The “educated” and I believe correct response would have been…”Thank you for coming to my home when called in regard to something this serious. Certainly, you may check around. I’m happy to do whatever I can to help rectify any misunderstanding by the neighbor as well as the police department. In fact, I probably should thank the neighbor for his conscientiousness, as well.”

Instead, he was most likely irritable when the officers arrived, having been absent minded enough to lock himself out of his home. That disgruntled attitude (coupled with a predisposition toward racism as an African Studies Prof.) then manifest itself in the form of indignant arrogance toward an innocent officer who was simply trying to do his job.  In order for this to be even remotely considered racial profiling, Gates would have to have been randomly stopped.  This was a B&E call, plain and simple.  When the officer asked for Gates’ ID, he went ballistic prior to complying with the officer’s request. Then the officer was satisfied and began to leave with the other officers and Gates continued to berate and malign the officer all the way to the front door with racial epithets. The officer warned him to let it go and asked him to stand down.  Gates refused and the officer took out his cuffs and warned him a last time.  Gates, was relentless and as a result was arrested.  The only reason that the charges were dropped, in my opinion, is because not only was race introduced (by Gates) but also, because he is a high profile individual. It’s bad press for the department any way you look at it and the higher ups don’t need Obama’s camp looking down at their fair city.  They had no choice, even though it would have been a simple misdemeanor.

Adding insult to injury, Obama proceeded to call the officer “stupid” without having read even so much as a newsclipping on the incident.  The educated and proper response here, in my opinion, should have been…”I have not read the police report on the incident so, I won’t speculate and will reserve my comments until such time.”  His arrogance wouldn’t let him do that.  Instead, he chose to get out ahead of the situation and make it about defense of a friend over defense of the facts.

In closing, what this said to me is that both Gates and his buddy Barack arrogantly overstated their cases.  It continues to be revealed that Obama has some pretty outspoken friends (Rev. Wright, communist party devotees, etc.).  Being outspoken is not a bad thing in and of itself, mind you.  However, the destructive words of an outspoken person who is not intent on speaking words that teach, heal or inform for the progression and edification of the whole over self…is quite dangerous.  This further indicates to me that birds of a feather flock together. These “friends” of Obama’s that continue to pop up can only cause one to think…Who is the real man beneath the spit and polished President?  Is there an outspoken radical buried someplace deep down in there who thinks that every irresponsible, harsh and divisive situation can be excused and brushed off by simply sitting down and sharing a beer together?  Great idea, until the beer starts talking…then what?  Seriously, though, Obama and other educated black men such as himself have a huge responsibility to speak intelligently to such issues as racism…not perpetuate its destructiveness themsevles by viewing every given incident from a racially-motivate point of view absent of the facts.

That’s my take.

Benman out!

If you don’t know President Obama visited Notre Dame recently to get a honorary degree. While most people were happy to see the new president there was a large group of people that really weren’t mostly because of Obama’sviews on abortion. Now at least all the footage I seen was a bunch of men protesting for pro-life. And my my thought is where is their place in the abortion vs anti-abortion argument.

To the guys of America If you pee standing up you have no place in the argument. Why it’s not our fight! Now I’ll prove it

Men are needed for conception that’s really it! Men DO NOT carry the baby for 9 months Men DO NOT go through labor or the risks involved in giving birth. Men Don’t nurse, get stretch marks, go through all the changes that the body goes through. Men don’t have to adjust diet quit smoking or drinking. I’m sorry but that’s the way it is.

Now if you’re a man and you get a woman pregnant there is NOTHING you can legally do to force her to give birth to that baby on the other hand there is nothing that you can do to force her to abort the baby. So the decision is entirely up to the woman anyway. Plus if Guys really don’t want to be a dad they can just LEAVE! Sorry if I opened an old wound for anyone but that’s the way it is.

So this pretty much proves that while men can have an opinion on abortion me personally I’m for it. If you don’t have a brain you’re not alive. I can dig up a corpse that’s been one year dead and get it’s heart beating again does that mean it’s alive HELL NO! However in the argument weather or not abortion should be legal or illegal or under what circumstances should it be given is really not for men to decided. We just don’t have enough footing in the world of pregnancy to form a argument.

Comments and opinions are more than Welcome

76% of Filipino adults say they understand spoken English; 75% say they read English; 61% say they write in English; 46% say they speak English; 38% say they think in English; while 8% say they are not competent in any way when it comes to the English language.

Every year we are faced with survey results of Filipino’s English competency. With the presentations of these results, are we also informed why we have to be competent in English?

Today, labels of basic commodities from sacks of rice to the cheapest candies found in groceries even in sari-sari stores are in English. If you couldn’t understand English then you might die of poisoning or might misuse a medicine and impair an illness.

English is programmed in today’s technological advancements such as laptops, flash disks, MP4s and digital cameras. You want to manipulate and maximize the use of your gadgets? Consult your manuals, and how are instructions written? In English.

They say that if you’re a foreigner, you have to know the laws of the land. How many Filipinos are caught or fall to accident because of ignorance? We aren’t foreigners but it’s as if we were. Signs, rules, and regulations of establishments such as schools, malls, and government offices are written in English.

In the academe, references that feed the world with the latest advancements in the different fields are mostly written in English. In the internet, few websites are in Filipino. Even government websites that are supposed to give us access to what was happening in the Philippines are in English. How could you extract knowledge and even enjoy those references if you couldn’t understand what it says? With these situations, it is no doubt that English proficient students outshine the others.

“English means jobs,” assumed Rick Santos president of American Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines.

In the professional sector, being competent in English is an edge. Why? From resumes, application forms and letters, to the interview and reports (financial, medical, etc.) to be submitted are required in English. Even phone calls in offices need to be in English.

To be able to produce not only locally but also globally competitive work force, a key factor (except for skills because those are prerequisites) is a good command and understanding of English.

Cards are all laid. Without being competent in English, how will you survive this modern world and age?

I’d begun hearing catch phrases like, “I got poked” - “Look who’s on my wall.” and “Tag this photo.”  It was a strange, new language; a language I didn’t understand nor cared to.  More often, these strange - almost coded - little messages would rear their ugly heads in normal conversation accompanied by smiles and giggles.  Whatever they were talking about brought them joy.  I still didn’t care.

“How many friends do you have?’

“I don’t know, but ’so and so’ just asked me to be her friend, too!”

Each conversation was part adolescent bliss and part emotional fulfillment.  What is this “thing” that has everyone so giddy?  Why is everybody talking about it…doing it and ridiculing me because I’m not?  Peer presure at it’s worst…or best, if you’re one of the addicts.  I avoided it like the plague for the same reason that I too am now addicted to it.  It can’t be done in moderation.  It’s all or nothing!  Sure, you think you’re “just checking it for a quick sec” and 12 hours later you’re dialoguing with three online friends, tagging a fourth friend’s photo, while adding seven new friends that you haven’t seen since you had acne and braces.  No question - FACEBOOK IS THE NEW CRACK!  Granted, I’ve never indulged in the magical white pebbles of death, but I do know people who have and this has the makings of something just as consuming…but in a good way.

What is the appeal (of FB not Crack)?   Let me try and explain it as best I can without sounding as if this is the only reason why it’s appealing and yet it pretty much hits the nail on the head…for me at least. (Whew.)

  1. Non-threatening Self-expression: It let’s the world know who you are, who you’re with, what you’ve done and what you’re into now - without you having to actually TELL anyone.
  2. Convenience: I can chat or not.  I can tag or not. I can answer or not (right now) and nobody gets hurt, because they’re interacting with 50 other people, simultaneously, who are making the same easy, snap decisions.
  3. Connecting without obligatory investment/commitment: There’s nothing like getting “befriended” on FB by someone from your past and being pleasantly surprised…for a second; only to remember that you were never that close to begin with.  No harm, no foul…add another friend to the tally.
  4. Reconnecting: Probably one of the greatest reasons for this site to exist. Friends who were friends THEN and after one million years of being apart, are still friends NOW as if you were never apart. (”Okay, it’s been 20 years…so where were we…oh yeah…so Debbie never liked her and I was all, no way…and she was like, yeah way!“)  Well, you get the idea.
  5. Family: Can you say - ”Quick updates!”  No more of the annoying - “Let me speak to Jimmy and then put Ray on, then grandma and let me talk to the twins after that.”  Suddenly, your unlimited minutes become very limited with a side of cauliflower ear.  With FB…TAG ME, BABY!
  6. Networking/hooking up: Probably the lamest reason to FB.  You should do an about FACE and BOOK on over to linkedin or eharmony if you want a job or a date.  You’re killing the lighthearted buzz with all your desperate neediness.   And last but not least…
  7. Bragging rights:  “How many friends you got?”  One gazillion and 3…TOP THAT!

I’ve said it before, but I HATE IT SO GOOD because it calls to me in the morning and at night.  Now I know why the caged bird…takes crack and sings.  FACEBOOK!

In closing, as incredibly genius as this magical white pebble of networking is, it will NEVER replace the comforting release of a long conversation, the thrilling rush of a warm embrace, the goose bumps from a long slow kiss, the touch of a familiar hand in yours or the satisfaction of sharing a good, hearty laugh together.  NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Stay connected…for real.

Republican unison by Maurice D.Williams

The Republicans think they hurt President obama, being unified as a party. Not passing the bill for the $800 billion dollar stimulus. All they really did was alienate themselves from him. They’ll really want a bill passed down the road!.Rest assured  he will veto it vehemently.About this 800 billion stimulus,I admit at first view to some extent it looked as the spending was relevant towards most programs. That was until the specifics were revealed.

There’s severe”pork”(over-spending) for certain programs that wouldn’t”jumpstart”the economy or produce jobs.Though admirable but probally not $460 million for contraceptive research. What I and other American citizens see is it doesn’t take geniuses or rocket-science to see where the money should go?,”to us that really need it”.The people of this country who have lost their jobs, savings ,homes have been foreclosed and have no healthcare. But all we are feed is the propaganda of  the big car manufacturers, wall st. and madoff need the bail-outs more!.They blatantly live high on the hog even after the bail-outs,”awarding themselves bonuses”.Total-disrespect and no accountability.”The hell with the American people”,but it’s us whose money you take for investments.

Yet the “fat-cats”in Washington the members of the senate too are exposed being the same as their counterparts.Dragging the people of the U.S. through all this red-tape to get this bill done.I believe there can be revisions of the stimulus where there can be compromised.Through Bipartisanship that it’s passed and distributed to us immediately!.The government and rich dislike that president obama’s”shutting-down”their over-spending on things irrelevant.Because if they hadn’t misused the money and pocketed it,the country wouldn’t be in it’s current state!.

“Miss, wag kang dadaan diyan may paputok…”

Moments of silence. And for all I know a firecracker cracked right in front of me. And gives me another reason to hate New Year, Filipino Style.

I spent a great deal of my vacation drowned in another world, thanks to literary works. But the backfall of that is acads went a step back (Actually it’s just me fretting over things that I can’t do). I can’t do so much with our report in EDL 121 since my groupmates are not sending the things that they promised that they will send (though I am ready with my part on the report), I can’t do so much with EDFD 120 since I have to consult my groupmates, and I can’t do so much with EDL 113 because it seems that a communicative textbook is like a needle in a haystack (I mean, how am I supposed to find those textbooks if schools’ libraries are closed because it is holiday?). Which gives me another reason to rant about professors leaving students with something to do during the holidays even if it is obvious that the students wouldn’t be able and deliberately won’t do it. Wet-Blankets.

So vacation became counter-productive like what I have been expecting. And the turn of the Eastern Calendar on Jan 26 is no better. I thought I could say Ox and Rooster in the same breath since those are in perfect harmony with the Snake (if you know Eastern Astrology, you would know what I mean)! Another year of moderate success and failures and what’s more, it coincides with my practicum(I don’t know if I’ll cry in desperation or if I’ll bring our house down in fury)! I hate being in midrange.

I hope that my tenacity will bring me fast-forward (and alive and sane!) to 2010.

S Novim Gadu!

Happy New Year!

While organizing the stash of academic papers that are in my room, I came across with a speech that I wrote 2 years ago. And I can’t believe that it’s been 2 years since I graduated from high school. I decided to post it here, for the sake of having a soft copy. Using my present standards, I realized that this speech is not as perfect as I thought it was after I wrote and delivered it. But I will reproduce this speech as is 2 years ago.

To our beloved administrators, Mr. and Mrs. Rolando V. Calingo; to our dear High School Principal, Mrs. Lolita A. Gaspar; to the Asst. Schools Division Superintendent, Dra. Florentina Lizano; to the respectable teachers; to the graduates; ladies and gentlemen; good evening.

It was already a decade ago since I first stepped into the portals of our Alma Mater but it seemed like only yesterday when me and my classmates met once again, greeted our teachers and discovered new faces. And now, we are all here gathered because of one reason: to savor the rewards of all of our hardwork. This night, as another milestone of our lives unfolds, I am here standing in front of you. A student. An epitome of the sacrifices of my fellow graduates and a symbol of joy for the people behind every student.

Graduates, we have been through many challenges. The carrying of voluminous books to and from the school, the endless homeworks, the exhausting projects and the people who did and did not help us molded our experiences here in our Alma Mater. These experiences tell us that our journey through life is not devoid of threats, disputes and victories. Indeed, we have come a long way and we are again one step closer in making our dreams a reality. How lucky we are that we have our parents, teachers and friends who helped us in our struggles. But this is not simply luck. This is destiny. It is our destiny that we have people who will accompany us. It is our destiny to excel, to prosper and to succeed.

Alexis Carrell said that “To progress, a man must remake himself and he cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both marble and the sculptor and in order to uncover his true visage he must shatter his own substance with the heavy blows of his hammer.” True enough. Even at my young age, I have been through many sufferings and I know dear graduates that you also have yours. Even Jesus Christ Himself died in the cross for our sins. But we must not fret, for no one cam fully understand the happiness that we can achieve through those sufferings. Facing it may be very difficult, sometimes, it makes the future vague and bleak but still, my belief in our capacity to beat the odds has always been there.

I do not know how many times I thought of giving up. That I have to do and be like this and that, and then nothing more? When I was younger, I looked at adults and wondered if I would be as eloquent and knowledgeable as they were. Now, I say to myself that it is not as difficult as it seemed. Then I suddenly realized that life has more to offer.

And this speech will never be complete without expressing my love and gratitude to the people who have been with me since day one. To the administrators, thank you for establishing the school’s secondary level, if it is not because of you, I will never be able to discover my talents and hone my abilities. To Mrs. Gaspar our high school principal, thank you for your support and believing in my leadership. To our teachers, to Mr. Pading our Math teacher, to Mr. Jordan our MAPEH teacher, to Ms. Flores our Physics teacher; thank you all for believing in our skills. We learned to love the different subjects because of your broad knowldege and patience in teaching. To my friends, though I can not name you all, I still want to thank you for the love that you gave, for the moments that we have been together and for the loyalty that we shared for the past ten years. And to our adviser, to the father of the Fourth Year Class Mr. Eraldo, thank you for all the patience that you gave to us even if there are time that we disappointed you because of our misdeed. We will never forget your line, “You may go except the cleaners.”

Learning will never be the same again because of you.

Of course, let us show our love to our parents who gave us the legacy of education. Let us give them a warm applause (clap). Now I want to express something that has been hidden in my heart for quite some time. To my mother, though I always frustrate you, I know that I love you, I will remain to be not just the child of your womb but also the child of your heart. To my father whose hands are rough from work, was gentle whenever I needed him in my projects. I hope that someday, I will learn the lessons of my parents: Patience and Love. I am not a perfect daughter, I am the cause of your disappointments, I can not count how many times you almost gave up on me. But I tried to be the daughter, the child that you can always be proud of. There is no Ivy J. Antonio in this world, if God did not give you to me. This night will never be able to surpass the many days and nights that you sacrificed because of me.

Mountford said that for knowledge to become wisdom and for the soul to grow, the sould must be rooted in God. True. And this night I want to offer all my awards and recognitions to Him, for He is the One who gave me the gift of intellect and my breath of life.

Graduates, after this, we will cross our different paths and we will enter another chapter of our lives-the college life. Then as we explore our abilities in this new world, we may feel that we are stuck in a rut for there is nothing else to conquer—well, everyday is a challenge in itself, and with renewed enthusiasm, all we need is to find strength to make ourselves shine in this new world. Life is full of tests and is a never-ending quest for opportunities and there are many rooms for improvement. And the college life is another world to improve, to see, to explore and to conquer.

I may not have mesmerized you like what the first Valedictorian did not made you cry like what the second Valedictorian did. But I hope that this speech will uplift you as we all continue living in this cycle we call life because I am not here to impress all of you, I am here because I want to express my innermost emotions in this momentous event.

Remember graduates, in life there are no rewinds. Savor this moment for we will never pass this way again. Congratulations Batch 2006, let’s clap our hands for a job well done!

There you have it. I have to admit that there are some parts in this speech wherein I just talked shit. I mean, I didn’t really mean saying it, just a formality sort of thing .It actually made me remember the bad things that happened during my last year in high school-controversies and issues that really shattered my relationship with some of my connections Given the chance, I would like to edit it and focus more on life’s realities. Maybe I was just too young then that is why this speech looked alright to me then. But now it’s not.

Like what I said, we live in a cycle called life and I will never be able to undo the things that are already done and this speech concretized the memories.

*with apologies to Renato Constantino

When my second child was three, I decided that I was going back to college for my undergraduate degree. After many, many miscommunications, (the college’s) and many snafus, (again, the college’s), I was accepted and began my journey through the undergraduate college educational path.

Fortunately, money wasn’t tight four years ago when I started; I was able to pay for each semester, the one or two classes I was able to fit around my mommy-schedule. But everyone told me to look for scholarships. “Do you know how much free money is out there?” I didn’t so I figured I would try. And I did. But there was nothing. All the scholarships I looked at had to be appropriate for what I was doing (English major, concentration in creative writing). Plus, I was, and still am, part-time. “Are you a recent high-school graduate?” No!  Are you black, white, Native American? Who cares what I am?  ”Did you score a three million or higher on your SATS?”  Irrelevant!  “Which sports did you play in high school?” Does smoking A Marlboro Red while carrying a stack of four heavy text books count? No sports! None!  “Are you five feet nine inches tall or taller?” What?  “Is the big toe on your right foot larger than the one on your left?” I mean, come on, what kinds of questions are these?

Why can’t they ask any questions that pertain to me?  “Are you an adult returning to college after many years of debating whether it’s the best thing to do? Hell yes! “Have you ever missed a day, even when the sole income source of your house crashed his dirtbike and was all broken and unable to move for a month and is still unable to work for many more months, which of course means you had to get a job?” No!  “Do you have a 3.9 GPA or higher?” Yes, yes, yes!  “Do you love school?” Yes!!!

It is impossible to squeeze any money out of anywhere: the English Department at my college, (”There’s not a dime here in the English Department. Check Financial Aid.”), the Financial Aid office, (my advisor was mean and made me cry), the freakin’ government. Do you know just to get stupid Aid for Part-Time Study, my tax return was FIFTY dollars over the limit? Good thing there was a ‘mistake’ on the return and had to be recalculated. I got a few bucks out of that but not even enough to cover a class.

I get so angry when I am sitting in my class, furiously scribbling my notes and asking relevant questions. I do all and more to earn a good grade while the athletes there on scholarships walk in twenty minutes late, check their cell phones every three seconds, laugh at the professor, and, come to think of it, I don’t think they ever bought the textbooks. Then they somehow score a “B+” on  the exam they had to borrow a pencil to take. Go freakin’ figure.  Wonder how they got the money for school. Oh, I guess they were just out of high school and had some sport scholarship. Lucky bastards.

Had I been not so intent on looking cool and smoking my cigs in high school, maybe I could have scored some cash for college on some sort of scholarship, too. But that was then and this is now. I am a truly serious student, more serious than a lot of the boneheads sitting in my classes laughing at everyone and not taking a single note in class. But they didn’t have to pay a dime, now, did they? Come on, can’t someone like me get any help at all?

It’s total bullshit.

Or rather…depending on someone’s major, college life could be fun and exciting or excruciating and frustrating!

I happen to have one of those majors that makes your life a living hell-accounting. Accounting sounds like a relatively mundane and easy major. But it has made me hate my life so many times. It makes me feel like I can never be happy, even when I graduate, because I will be doing what I already dislike in college. Unfortunately, I am stuck with this major because I can’t even change majors now that I am so deep in my education already.

I wish I can just be one of those genius that gets it. You know what, I don’t even mind studying my ass off as long as I get something rewarding in return. It is such a slap in the face when I try so HARD and yet I still don’t do good in my accounting classes. Sometimes I wonder, what do they want from us? I already gave you my life! What else can you possibly want from us students?!

So many times I thought of changing majors. But in this economy, what if I major in something like drama and end up working for Denny’s when I graduate? Is there a major out there that will guarantee me a job when I graduate?! Wait…yes there is. It’s fxxking accounting. Okay, aside from accounting, is there anything else?

I don’t want to sound like a whining baby crying about my classes…wait, this is complainary so I guess I can complain all I want and you guys can’t even judge me. Haha
